The new Holiday Inn, Bristol City Centre has just been installed with a fantastic array of the latest Hotel AV products on the market. There are 155 rooms in total, with 32 inch Samsung LED's installed in the standard rooms and 40 inch screens in the Executive rooms and suites. As well as having 2 LED screens, the suites also benefit from luxurious bathroom TV's. All rooms have the latest HD Teleadapt hub as well as iPod docking stations with Clock/Alarm functionality.
The bar area enjoys an HD feed from SKY on all TV's, as well as the high luminosity projector. There are also two 3D LCD TV's from LG to further enhance the experience during key events. The conference area has been equipped with a professional Sharp Digital Signage Television and the entire hotel has it's own Information Channel. There are even screens in the public area restrooms and gymnasium.

When the owners of The Cumberland Hotel in Bournemouth were looking to upgrade his analogue system to digital, they turned to the team at Airwave for advice. The first hurdle was to upgrade the existing TV infrastructure in Bournemouth’s only purpose build Art Deco hotel to accommodate the new digital signals, which was completed at a much lower cost than originally expected. To compliment a major refurbishment programme in the last year, new TV’s were sought to complete the update. The hotel now boasts 127 of the latest Sharp Hotel mode LCD screens, some even with built in DVD. These DVDs however have been specially selected as they are modular and therefore easy to replace without necessarily removing the screen. (This is important as DVDs can suffer a higher failure rate than TV screens). Sharp premier Freeview HD TVs

Sharp has been first to market with a Hotel TV with Freeview HD tuners inbuilt. The new range includes 32, 40 and 42 inch models with the normal hotel features as well as USB cloning of settings. Andy Watts of Sharp explained “We believe that we have stolen a lead on the market, and the new range is perfectly timed to capitalise on the extra demand from the World Cup Football”. The World Cup will be shown broadcast on the Freeview HD service on BBC and ITV and only available to those hotels with Freeview HD tuners in room, or special HD distribution systems. No freeview – no Problem

Having no Freeview signal is not the end of the World as Robert McNeice of Kinloch Hotel explains “We presented Airwave with a problem unique to areas of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. There is uncertainty of what quality of Freeview signal if any we will get when the digital switchover happens in our specific geographical location. We had consultants look into what our best options would be, but it was Airwave who had the knowledge and experience to present a plausible solution. Airwave rose to the challenge and installed a bespoke head-end that receives a Free-Sat signal then converts it to 20 digital channels on our existing network. It was an opportunity for us to chat to our existing clients, meet new customers and demonstrate equipment in a ‘live’ situation, not always possible when we go to meet people at sites.

Kidney Dialysis becomes a little more bearable

Life has just become a little easier for patients living with kidney failure in North East London as the local dialysis unit located within the new gateway Surgical Centre at Newham University Hospital has now been installed with the latest Samsung Professional Freeview LCDs from Airwave.
Coax cable had been installed to each TV point and an aerial socket along with a power socket were fitted into the ceiling void close the proposed ceiling pole locations which were above the foot of each bed, within the curtained railed area. The requirement was for individual LCD TV’s with integrated Freeview, for each patient to be able to enjoy their own choice of TV or radio channel from the comfort of their bed or chair.
Space around the bed head is always tight in renal units and with precedence quite rightly being given to the dialysis equipment and other medical devices the Trust decided that rather than have the TV’s mounted on an arm from behind the bed head, our ceiling mounted pendant bracket with 22” screen would be the ideal solution for Newham Renal.

Lindsay davies of Airwave Healthcare explains “As the majority of the beds and chairs are positioned in bays of 4 or 6 it was essential that the TV’s were programmed to ‘headphones only’ with an audio cable discreetly run through the suspended ceiling and down into the bedhead trunking to where a headphone socket was fitted. Extended cable length (1.8m) headphones were supplied which allow patients to comfortably stay ‘plugged in’ despite the fact that their chair, or bed in the seating position, may actually be some distance from the wall. As the dialysis patients are frequently on the ward they have been provided with their own head set to keep and re-use each visit however they could in fact use any of their own headphones from personal devices such as iPod, cd players and the like”
She explained further “Another useful feature is the multi bedded area remote control. Each remote control is programmed to one of 10 variations in the multi bedded areas thus avoiding cross ‘zapping’ by patients, a unique benefit available on Airwave’s specialist healthcare TV range and so terribly annoying for patients (and staff) if a traditional TV is used and patients change every TV’s channel within their bay, and not always accidentally!”

For this particular project a 22” black finish TV was selected however, a number of our healthcare range TV’s (19” and 22”) are available in optional white finish as are many of our arms and brackets.

A new TV system providing patients with the full range of Freeview digital channels and funded by ‘The Friends of Richmond Friary Community Hospital ‘ has been ceremoniously ‘switched on ‘ by local MP, Rt Hon William Hague.

Staff at the hospital are delighted that patients can now enjoy top quality TV and radio with a wider choice of channels free of charge, they have already found time is saved as they are no longer required to change channel or volume on the communal TV or settle disputes about which programme should be on. The concern now is that patients will be in less of a hurry to get well and go home!

Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust have contracted Airwave to kit out their new 34 single bedded rooms in the new City Care Centre.

Airwave have installed 19” Sharp Freeview TV’s fixed to an articulated arm for easy patient use and accessible from the bed, or the bedside chair. Lindsay Davies at Airwave explained “The Trust made the decision to offer free TV and radio to patients who now enjoy a full range of Freeview channels. There is a Hospital Information Channel available too, the Trust can load pictures, images, information, and video onto a media card which once uploaded will play on a loop on the Hospital Channel. The unit is currently promoting hand washing and hygiene on their channel.”

Lisburn City welcomes first hotel

The city of Lisburn in Northern Ireland, has welcomed its first hotel with the official opening of a new Premier Inn. Fifty full and part-time jobs have been created with the opening of the 60-room hotel by the budget chain. The hotel is located on the outskirts of the County Antrim city, near the Sprucefield shopping development. Airwave has installed the latest Samsung Hotel LCDs, providing the full variety of Freeview channels, including interactive red button functionality and the mandatory subtitle feature.

Remember, remember the 4th of November

Forget Guy Fawkes, the 4th November is the date to remember in the Granada region, as this is the date at which analogue channels will start to be switched off. Hoteliers are being urged to avoid a last minute rush and ensure that they either upgrade their TVs to receive the new Freeview services in full, or at least to install headend equipment to enable their existing TVs to continue to receive BBC1, BBC2, ITV Channel 4 and Five.

All Freeview TVs must be retuned

On 30th September 2009, all Freeview TVs in the UK will require retuning to avoid losing some channels including Five, ITV4 and BBC Radio stations. That means that hoteliers with Freeview TVs already installed, will also be required to retune their own TVs on this date to avoid losing these channels. Many people check their postcode at www.digitaluk.co.uk to see when the analogue signal is being turned off. This normally indicates the situation based on their local transmitter, but if the transmitter is out of area this information could be misleading and hotels need to check for the actual transmitter their aerial is pointing to. “Hoteliers in Llandudno, who cater mainly for English guests, really need to check if they are receiving their signals from the Winter Hill transmitter, because if so they need to upgrade to digital by November this year.” said Andrew Moss, Northern Area Sales Manager for Airwave.

Digital UK Issues warning on equipment

Digital UK, the industry body which is managing the Digital Switchover, recently warned retailers of the need to thoroughly check the specifications of equipment they are selling to ensure that it complies with those required to work new digital transmission standards.
